Frequently asked questions

What is Qumulus?

+

Qumulus offers a unique, subscription-based private cloud platform built on OpenStack, the leading open-source cloud platform, specifically designed for SMEs and developers. Imagine your personal AWS, tailored just for your needs, with straightforward, fixed pricing starting at $150/€150/£150. No more unexpected bills from a VM left running – our model ensures cost transparency. Designed for speed and simplicity, Qumulus includes a comprehensive suite of top open-source tools for enhanced security and complete operational visibility. This platform redefines private cloud accessibility by eliminating large upfront costs, long-term contracts, and ongoing maintenance hassles, while retaining the flexibility to scale as needed. Qumulus combines the best of both public and private cloud worlds, pioneering a novel cloud approach

Why do I need Qumulus?

+

Qumulus is your ideal solution for a versatile development playground and for hosting your sandboxes, development, and staging environments. It's designed to manage your DevOps processes efficiently. With Qumulus, enjoy the benefits of low-cost, high-performance and a comprehensive seamless backup process with predictable fixed-cost pricing. It's the hassle-free, cost-effective choice for all your developmental needs.

Qumulus is also an ideal choice if you have regulatory constraints that prohibit storing data on shared hardware or in the cloud, as our platform can seamlessly adapt to your private, on-premises setup or run on dedicated hardware that we can manage for you.

If your operations specifically demand high-speed, low-latency computing, networking, and storage, Qumulus excels with its streamlined local architecture. By utilizing the latest dedicated hardware, our platform offers superior performance that outperforms traditional public cloud services that typically run on aging hardware and sprawling complex infrastructure that can really slow things down

How can Qumulus offer such low prices?

+

By purchasing or leasing bare metal servers and implementing free, open-source cloud software on top, we significantly reduce costs versus public cloud. Don't take our word for it. Have a look at this article by David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Railsand  and cofounder of Basecamp & HEY. He  saved $2.3M in annual cloud costs by purchasing $600,000 worth of servers. While there are additional datacenter costs, the overall savings are substantial. What's more this new hardware was faster, more modern and had more capacity than his previous cloud servers.

How does Qumulus ensure its servers don't become outdated and slow like those in the public cloud?

+

At Qumulus, our strategy differs from other providers. By leasing our hardware from a wide range of global bare-metal providers, we're not locked into using equipment from a single source. This flexibility allows us to always offer you the latest hardware options, at a location of your preference.

Our unique deployment process also enables smooth migration between platforms with minimal disruption, ensuring our clients can seamlessly migrate to the newest and most advanced technology as soon as it becomes available.

Moreover, since we don’t own the hardware, we're not burdened with an inventory of outdated equipment. This means we won’t ever offload old, slower hardware onto our customers without their knowledge, a practice sometimes seen in the industry.

Is Qumulus intended to completely replace public cloud services?

+

Not exactly. Even we at Qumulus utilize public cloud for certain aspects of our operations and platform. However the bulk of our development is performed on our private cloud, especially when it comes to Kubernetes which is designed to be interoperable across vendors  However public cloud services are unparalleled in their range of serverless offerings, scalability, and reliability.

Hence, we adopt a hybrid strategy, using the Qumulus platform for most of our DevOps processes, and as a development playground that grants our developers the liberty to innovate without the stress of cost management. This approach also shields us from unexpected bill shocks. Our platform alerts us when resources are nearing capacity, and then we just do a quick tidy up.

The cost-effectiveness of Qumulus allows us to allocate resources more liberally, moving away from the typical public cloud practice of minimal provisioning. This approach, coupled with our high-performance hardware, really enhances our development speed and efficiency, particularly in our CI/CD workflows.

Does Qumulus offer auto-scaling capabilities?

+

Private Cloud, like what Qumulus offers, operates differently from public cloud models. Instead of unlimited instant resources, you lease a specific amount of server capacity. This means there's a limit to how many VMs you can run, and once you reach your server's maximum capacity, you can't add more VMs unless you free up space or add more capacity.

While you can scale the number of servers or adjust their configurations on demand, this isn't instantaneous – the speed depends on how quickly the provider can provision the new hardware, and there's typically a minimum one-month commitment and a minimal fee for cloud reconfiguration.

Many of our customers opt to overprovision hardware due to its affordability, ensuring they always have the necessary capacity on hand. Within these hardware limits, our platform does support cloud-based autoscaling, allowing you to adjust resources according to your needs while keeping in mind the constraints of the leased hardware.

What is the VM capacity of the starter package?

+

Our starter package, equipped with 64/128GB RAM (dependent on location), 0.75 TB storage, and 8 cores, can support around 10 or 20 $GB VMs. Priced at $150, this breaks down to approximately $15 per 4GB VM. This price includes unlimited Internet traffic and there are not other costs. For best value choose Euro as the currency and we will provide you with a server from Hetzner which currently offers the best value.

Is Qumulus secure?

+

Qumulus is primarily hosted by OVHcloud and Hetzner, two of the largest and most advanced cloud service providers in the world. They offer best-in-class network, physical, and system security measures and are highly reliable. They are also certified to be compliant with the highest information security standards including ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC-2 Type 2. Internally, our developers are security aware and we are in the process of adopting DevSecOps in our development processes. We utilise the latest security technologies and practices and plan to achieve our own independent certifications. Our future plans include running independent security audits and penetration testing.

How can I be sure that my data is safe with Qumulus?

+

Qumulus takes a unique and flexible approach to data safety. We regularly create compressed, space-efficient snapshots of your entire cloud platform, including all it's configuration. What's more, you have the control to select both the frequency and retention policy for these snapshots, both locally and remotely, ensuring a backup schedule that fits your specific needs. This entire process is monitored for reliability.

Additionally, these snapshots can be replicated to your chosen Linux server or any ZFS-compatible service, and we offer to host your backups for a minimal fee. Our backups are saved in open-standard formats, enhancing portability to various public cloud platforms.

Unlike other providers, we focus on eliminating vendor lock-in. Our goal is to make it incredibly easy for you to transfer your data off our platform if needed, fostering a sense of trust and security. We're committed to earning your loyalty through exceptional service, trust, and transparency, rather than restrictive policies.

What support do you offer?

+

At Qumulus, we provide support primarily during UK business hours, and our goal is to respond to all tickets within one business day, though we often reply much quicker. Our support portal is available here For more immediate assistance, our global team of developers is active on Slack. They're available to help with any queries or issues you might have. Feel free to join our community with this invite link for real-time support and interaction with our team

Is the pricing for Qumulus services truly fixed?

+

Our aim at Qumulus is to offer fixed, all-inclusive pricing that is transparent and based solely on server nodes. This means that your costs remain the same regardless of platform usage or the number of users. As your business grows, our pricing structure remains consistent, free of any 'Enterprise' level surcharges. However, it's important to note that in some cases, depending on your chosen provider and architecture, there may be external charges for bandwidth overuse, which are outside our control. Additionally, for those opting to use our remote backup storage service, we charge based on the amount of backup storage used.

How reliable is your cloud platform?

+

At Qumulus, reliability is a key focus, though it's important to note that we deploy our cloud on servers from external providers or even your own, which means we rely partly on their reliability. Our chosen providers are global entities with established records of reliability and swiftly addressing issues.

We're proactive in monitoring your platform, often detecting and addressing potential problems before they impact you. Clients also have the option for a high-availability deployment.

However, in line with our commitment to simplicity, performance, and cost-effectiveness, we haven’t incorporated excessive failover measures into our product design. Therefore, while Qumulus is ideal for playgrounds, development or non-critical DevOps environments, we advise hosting production environment in the public cloud or having a contingency plan, such as a failover to public cloud services, for critical operations.

What range of services are included with Qumulus?

+

Our initial launch of Qumulus will focus on essential services: virtual machines, Kubernetes, firewalls, load balancing, and VPN.

Alongside these, we’re offering an externally hosted suite for logging, monitoring, and security, which includes Hashicorp Vault, KeyCloak, Grafana, Loki, and Mimir.

Post-launch, based on customer input, we plan to expand our offerings to include managed databases, object storage etc, and a comprehensive DevOps tool stack. Initially, these services will be hosted on our platform at no extra cost. In the future, we aim to host each customer's DevOps tool stack within their private cloud space, ensuring isolation and enhanced security.

Does Qumulus allow administrative access to its servers and services?

+

We are doing something pretty unique - we are making private cloud highly accessible at incredibly low cost.

Key to this is minimizing our support costs. To achieve this, we've streamlined our deployment process and adopted measures to reduce the risk of misconfiguration by restricting direct admin access to the platform. This helps maintain stability and security.

We are committed to ensuring our customers can meet their needs within this framework and will work with them to adjust settings as required, all while maintaining a stringent change control process for reliability."

Which geographic locations does Qumulus support?

+

Qumulus currently supports a range of locations where our providers have data centers, including various sites across Europe and Canada. We're actively working to expand our list of providers to increase global availability. If you have a preferred bare metal provider in your region, we're open to recommendations and will consider adding them to enhance our service reach.

Can I run Windows Desktops on your platform?

+

Yes, our platform support UEFI SecureBoot and TPM which are required for Windows 11 and should run most operating systems that can run on an X86 processer. Microsoft Windows requires specific drivers which are available online and we can provide instructions on how to build an image or build an image for you. We are looking into streamlining the Windows Image building process.

We can provide you with Windows server licensing our you can bring your own licenses. Due to our platform being dedicated to a single customer, it isn't subject to restrictive Microsoft Desktop licensing associated with multi-tenant platforms.

Can I get console access to the VMs or Kubernetes nodes?

+

Yes, Qumulus offers full console access to VMs through our portal, setting us apart from some cloud providers.

For those who need more technical control, we support the use of virt-manager, an open-source remote client. It’s handy for specific scenarios and can be easily installed on Linux via your package manager, on Windows within WSL, and on MacOS using Homebrew.

How long does it take to provision my cloud?

+

The time it takes to provision your cloud with Qumulus can range from just a few minutes to up to three days or unusual cases even more, largely depending on the specific provider and their current availability. Our part of the provisioning process typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes. Additionally, some of our providers are capable of provisioning the required hardware in as little as 120 seconds

What are the usage restrictions on the Qumulus cloud?

+

Beyond our own standard terms and conditions, each of our providers or datacenters has their own set of terms, often including provisions against misuse like abuse or Bitcoin mining. When you sign up for our services, you'll be provided with the relevant terms and conditions specific to the provider and datacenter you're utilizing, ensuring clarity on permissible use.
